SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAMS/COURSES

Reading Comprehension, Writing and Public Speaking Enrichment Program

GRADES: 2-3, 4, 5 AND 6-8
PROGRAM OFFERED ONLINE OR IN-PERSON AT Markham, Mississauga, and NORTH YORK CAMPUSes
COST: $2,000 | SEPTEMBER 2024 TO JUNE 2025

Power of Words Academy offers an enrichment reading comprehension, writing and public speaking program for Grade 2-8 students. The program runs the school year (from September to June) and classes are held once a week for 1.5 hours.

The program comprises of three units:

Reading Comprehension and Summarizing Unit (where students will learn how to examine texts and extract the main ideas and key details)
Writing Unit (where students learn the structure of writing four types of essays, including expository, persuasive, comparative and contrast and research essays)
Public Speaking and Debate Unit (where students learn how to write and deliver a speech, as well as develop debate skills)

In addition, 20 minutes of each class during the school year is dedicated to the building blocks of writing (including vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, etc). Students will be given two mini-lessons and work out of the Language Power Now workbooks during this segment.

A deposit of $100 is due on registration, and the remaining fee of $1,900 is payable over four installments over the school year.

NEW - MASTERING CHATGPT: HARNESSING THE POWER OF AI FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

This ten-week course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively use ChatGPT, a powerful AI language model, for various applications such as generating text, answering questions, and providing natural language interfaces.

Empower yourself with the limitless potential of ChatGPT, the state-of-the-art language model, and unlock your creativity through the art of prompt engineering. Dive deep into the world of AI-powered language generation as you learn how to craft precise and effective prompts that guide ChatGPT to produce coherent, relevant, and innovative responses across diverse domains. From creative writing and problem-solving to research and coding, explore a range of applications where ChatGPT can augment your abilities and aid in critical thinking. Alongside practical exercises and project-based learning, you will also explore the ethical implications and responsible usage of AI, empowering you to harness its potential ethically and responsibly. By the end of the course, you will be equipped with the skills to utilize ChatGPT as a powerful tool, opening new horizons for your academic and creative endeavours.

English Prep Course for Entrance Exam [SSAT, isee, UTS, IB, TOPS, MaCS]

GRADES: 5-7
Course offered online or in-person at our North York Campus
COST: $700 | September to November 2024

This 8-week course will familiarize your child with all aspects of the SSAT and ISEE exams, focusing on the test's verbal, reading, and essay components.

Students will learn all the types of questions they will face in the verbal and reading comprehension sections. Strategies for solving each type of question will be clearly explained, followed up with plenty of opportunities to practice each type of question under timed conditions. Students will learn critical SSAT/ISEE test-taking strategies and time management skills that will help them maximize their test scores.

This course will provide access to proven resources that can build the student’s vocabulary, which is crucial if you want to improve your score substantially. It will also help your child prepare for the English component for MaCS, TOPs, IB etc.

entrepreneurship Course

GRADES: 7-9
Course offered online or in-person at our North York Campus
COST: $750 | September 2024 to February 2025

This is a 14-week course designed to give students in Grades 7 to 9 an introduction to Business English. The lessons are led by qualified teachers and classes are interactive. There is a maximum of 12 students in a class and the program is offered virtually (delivered using the Zoom Platform and Google Classroom) and in-person at our North York Campus.

The course comprises of three units:

Business Letters - Writing letters introduces students to business communications to build their confidence before they write reports. This unit will focus on business-related correspondence. In each lesson, they will write letters from a different perspective. (i.e. Someone writing as a business owner providing information about their product, a reader commenting about a business-related item in the newspaper/blog, etc.)
Report Writing - Report writing can be daunting for students who have not done this type of writing before, but also because their experience with the business world and the various aspects of it is likely limited. To this end, each lesson will incorporate some teaching of fundamentals like sales, marketing, and entrepreneurship. To facilitate and develop their interest, students will be guided at the beginning of the course to create their own “business.” Each student will then complete common report writing assignments specific to their own business. During this part of the course, students will necessarily have to engage in research.
Presentation tools and skills - A significant part of real-world business involves presentation and promotion. To this end, this part of the course will see students create sales and marketing campaigns to promote the products and services for their “companies.” As well and critical to today’s business development is the use of technology. To this end, students will develop and practice their skills in all the areas outlined below.

As a major, final project, Students will “introduce” their product to the world as outlined in the Cumulative Project. This project will incorporate all aspects of this final unit. The presentation will involve in-person oral communication, demonstrate various presentation technologies used, and a website students have created for their own business.

Preparation for Grade 9 English Course

GRADES: 6-8
COURSE OFFERED ONLINE OR IN-PERSON AT NORTH YORK CAMPUS
COST: $750 | FEBRUARY TO JUNE 2025

This is a 16-week course designed to give students in Grades 6 to 8 the fundamental skills required for success in the Grade 9 English Curriculum. The lessons are led by qualified teachers and classes are interactive. There is a maximum of 12 students in a class. The program is offered virtually (delivered using the Zoom Platform and Google Classroom) and in person at our North York and Mississauga campuses.

The course will incorporate units of study, providing a foundation in each strand of the English curriculum which students will encounter in Grade 9 English. The course comprises of four units:

Short Stories - Three short stories will be covered during this part of the course. Each story is designed to cover the elements of plot, theme and character.
Novel Study - A short novel will be assigned at the beginning of the course, which will be the focus of this unit. The analysis of the novel will cover the elements particular to a novel as distinct from a short story. This unit will culminate in an Independent Study Unit, which includes written and oral components.
Poetry - This part of the course will cover figurative language and analysis concepts.
Advanced Essay Writing - Building on skills taught in previous POW courses, this unit will teach skills specific to writing a Literary Essay of 500-600 words. The Essay will be written on topics related to the novel studied in Unit 2.

In addition, an Independent Study Unit (ISU) will be introduced at the beginning of the course. A choice of novels will be offered to students. Their ISU will include the following activities related to the novel students have chosen:

Summary notes on plot, character and theme
A poem to illustrate a theme found in their chosen novel
An activity to involve the class which teaches students something about the novel.
An oral presentation to the class to highlight their chosen novel

As workplaces become more collaborative, the ability to clearly express ideas is, perhaps more than ever before, a core skill across all areas of interest. No matter how good an idea is, if it can’t be expressed effectively, it risks being lost in the shuffle of a very busy world. Likewise, the old saw is as true now as it ever was: great stories happen to those who can tell them. That’s the point where Power of Words begins, namely that student success is tied to effective written and verbal communication. It’s also about finding a bit of joy in there as well—debate is a growing area of interest in the public and private school sectors, not only because it’s important, but also because it’s fun. Power of Words offers afterschool and weekend sessions throughout the year to give students a chance to grow their skills in a supportive, dedicated environment. In addition, the summer sessions offer opportunities to drill down on debate and language skills, offering some variety to the season’s activities while also helping with the summer lull in academic work. While some programs aim at the high school level, the Power of Words session allow younger students to get their feet wet, which is a draw for many of the families that enroll.
